ATTORNEY - OPERATIONS DESCRIPTION
This position will provide legal support to the Company's operational business units. The position will work with other attorneys in the Devon Legal Department and will primarily focus on handling transactional and contract matters relating to the Company’s upstream oil and gas exploration and production business.  The position also will provide legal support on some credit, treasury, corporate finance, and other corporate transactional matters.  The position will be based at Devon’s corporate headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in an appropriate jurisdiction. 

• Four (4) or more years of experience practicing law at a law firm, corporate legal department, or relevant government agency.
• Experience with oil and gas related contracts and/or transactions is strongly preferred.  
• Excellent academic credentials, legal research abilities, and written and verbal communication skills.

• Must have sound judgment and be able to work effectively and with attention to detail under time constraints.
• Must be a self-motivated team player with the ability to work effectively and efficiently in both group and independent settings.
• Must have a strong work ethic, excellent interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, collegiality, and integrity.

• Ability to travel occasionally as needed.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide legal counsel to the Company’s business units concerning federal, state, tribal, and local laws impacting the Company’s oil and gas exploration and production business.

• Review, interpret, negotiate, draft, and provide guidance on a variety of oil and gas related contracts and agreements, including oil and gas leases, joint operating agreements, production sharing agreements, master service agreements, material and supply agreements, easements, rights of way, surface use agreements, license agreements, confidentiality agreements, etc.
• Assist with oil and gas related transactions, including acquisitions and divestitures, purchase and sale agreements, farmouts, joint venture agreements, acreage trades, etc.
• Conduct legal research and provide practical guidance to the Company’s business units on specific issues impacting the Company’s operations.

• Provide legal guidance on credit, treasury, corporate finance, and other corporate transactional matters.
• Assist with other legal matters as needed for the Legal - E&P Operations group and the Legal - Corporate Affairs and Governance group.

• Develop and maintain a working understanding of the Company’s operations, business goals, and legal strategies.

• Develop and maintain a working understanding of the oil and gas industry and the laws and regulations applicable to the upstream exploration and production business.
• Work and communicate effectively with the Company’s executives, attorneys, employees, contractors, outside counsel, and third-party stakeholders.
